It was a scintillating performance by renowned Goan concert pianist from Vienna-Austria Marialena Fernandes, as she enthralled the packed gathering at the Friday Night event hosted by the Goan Overseas Association (GOA) at the Goan Community Centre in Brampton-Toronto on May 22.
In his welcome address, Selwyn Collaco, president of GOA Toronto, described Marialena as a fellow Goan whose life and work has brought immense pride to the Goan community across the world.
“We in the GOA Toronto are immensely proud that one of our own has carried the spirit of Goa to the greatest concert halls and universities of the world. And we are deeply moved that in 2025, the Government of India recognised her exceptional service to the Indian diaspora with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samaan — one of the highest honours bestowed upon persons of Indian origin abroad. It is an honour richly, richly deserved.”
During her performance, Marialena Fernandes also interacted with the gathering.
Additional performers at the event included Edlyn de Souza as well as Jerry Coutinho, Alexandria and John Sylvan.
Marialena was born in Mumbai to Goan roots, and from the earliest years it was clear that she possessed a quite extraordinary gift. After earning her Licentiate Diploma of the Royal Schools of Music, London, she claimed First Prize at the All India Beethoven Bicentennial Piano Competition, a competition initiated by the Goethe Institute, Germany — an achievement that signalled to the world that a remarkable talent had arrived.
A scholarship followed, taking her to Munich and then to Vienna, where she completed her Diploma in Piano and Chamber Music with unanimous distinctions at what is today the University of Performing Arts, Vienna.
Her contribution to musical life in Austria has been profound and enduring. From 1988 she served as Educator for Piano and Chamber Music at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory in Eisenstadt, and from 1991 as Professor for Chamber Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna — nurturing generations of musicians over more than three decades.

G.O.A. Toronto President Selwyn Collaco presents an award of distinction to Marialena Fernandes for her accomplishments and contributions to the field of music.
Marialena’s passion for her Goan and Indian heritage has never dimmed with the distance of years or miles. In 2013, she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, with her landmark thesis: ‘The Konkani Song — Roots, Development, Documentation 1510–1961’ — a deeply personal and scholarly act of love for Goan culture.
As a performer, she has graced stages across the globe — at the MIT, in Illinois, across South America, Australia, Africa and capitals throughout Europe — as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral collaborator and jury member at international competitions.
“And yet, year after year, she returns to India, dedicating her visits to bringing classical music to diverse communities, building bridges between the cultural worlds of India and Austria, and inspiring the next generation,” said Selwyn.
Since 2015, Marialena has led annual concert tours to India with her European colleagues and her finest students — a project she calls the ‘Quest for Passion’ — driven by her conviction that music is one of the most powerful forces for human understanding and connection.
Reflecting on Marialena’s performance at the Friday Night event in the Goan Community Centre, Selwyn added: “What Marialena gave us was something altogether different — something that touched a place far deeper than appreciation. It moved us. Every single one of us present at the Goan Community Centre.”
“What moved me most was not only the staggering brilliance of her technique, but the profound feeling soul and humility with which Marialena gave herself to the music. There was a generosity in her playing — a sense that she was offering something deeply personal — and we, the audience, felt every moment of it.”
“I would like to thank Marialena for having shared her talent with us and also acknowledge Edlyn D’Souza for all his help in introducing me to Marialena and bringing the event to fruition.”
On the occasion, the G.O.A. Toronto presented an award of distinction to Marialena for her accomplishments and contributions to the field of music.
In addition, noted lawyer, musician and author Francis Rodrigues presented Marialena and Selwyn with his book ‘Greatest Konkani Song Hits – Vol 2’.
