Bardez won the inaugural edition of Geno Cup U-16 two-dayers cricket tournament, while Tiswadi emerged runners-up at GCA Academy ground at Porvorim on Friday.
Bardez, who had scored 129 runs batting first on winning the toss, had taken 58-run lead in the first innings over Tiswadi. That proved decisive in the finals. Om Madgaonkar scored 40 runs for Bardez, while Anand Tendulkar contributed 30 runs. Tiswadi's Manish Kakode took five wickets for 35 runs. Bardez's Yuvraj Singh claimed four wickets for
16 runs while Chirag Naik picked up a couple, as Tiswadi folded up for 71 runs. Lakhmesh Pawane with 28 runs, was their top run-getter.
Anil Arolkar's boys came out to bat on the second day with a handy 58 runs lead to their advantage and scored 124 runs in their second innings. Udit Yadav was their top-scorer with 48 runs. Sagar Vantamuri took five wickets for 34 runs in 25.4 overs. Tiswadi, coached by Narayan Kambli, were 111/6 in 31 overs at the end of play on the final day. Parth Teli was not out on 25 runs. Sagar Vantamuri made 22 runs. Om Madgaonkar claimed three wickets.
Om Madgaonkar of Bardez was adjudged man of the match while Sagar Vantamuri of Tiswadi was named player of the tournament. Udit Yadav (Bardez) was named best batsman of the tournament, while Tiswadi's Manish Kakode emerged the best bowler. Aryan Khutkar of Sanguem was adjudged best fielder.
In the era dominated by T20s where even teenagers are being driven to for the lure of big money and glamour, the mission of Geno family is clear; they want to do whatever they can to provide a platform and support, to youngsters to develop proper cricketing skills in them.
Father and son duo - Geno Pharmaceuticals CMD, Dilip Salgaocar and Executive Director, Sagar - stressed that the multi-day format is the only way forward that will help players from all talukas develop. And hence Geno Cup competition will be an annual affair with the intention of preparing the Goan youngsters for the ultimate challenge of Test cricket, they declared. The organisers also thanked and urged Goa Cricket Association to continue cooperation with Geno Pharmaceuticals in their endeavour to help Goan cricket find its new stars.
