India has officially unveiled its 17-member traveling squad for the highly anticipated 2023 Asia Cup. The announcement came during a press conference held in Delhi, where both Rohit Sharma, the team's captain, and Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, shared valuable insights regarding the selection.
Notably, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have made their way into India's ODI squad for the Asia Cup. This inclusion follows their successful recovery from thigh and back injuries, respectively, marking a significant return to the team.
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, introduced the 17-man Asia Cup squad during the Delhi press conference. Among the fresh faces, young left-hander Tilak Varma stood out as an intriguing choice, despite not having any prior experience in ODI cricket.
The squad also features the return of fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna, who recently made their international comebacks during the ongoing T20I series in Ireland, following their recovery from back surgeries. Additionally, Mohammed Shami has made a comeback after being rested during the entire West Indies tour, while Mohammed Siraj, along with the versatile allrounders Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur, complete the pace attack.
However, the experienced legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal found himself omitted from the squad, with Kuldeep Yadav being favored as the sole wristspinner. The team opted for two fingerspinning allrounders in Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, with no offspinner included in the mix.
Another noteworthy selection was Ishan Kishan, chosen as the second wicketkeeper in the squad, backing up Rahul. Kishan, a left-handed batter, also provides the team with a reserve opening option. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson has been designated as the backup player and will accompany the team to Sri Lanka.
The Asia Cup is set to kick off on August 30, with Pakistan hosting Nepal in Multan. India's first Group A encounter is scheduled against Pakistan in Pallekele on September 2, followed by a match against Nepal in the same venue on September 4. Group B comprises Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super Four stage. The final showdown is set to take place in Colombo on September 17, featuring the leading teams from the Super Four stage.
