A fighting unbeaten century by Amogh Desai took Goa close to Bengal's total but the hosts are still in control of the Ranji Trophy Group D match in Kolkata. The visitors are trailing by 177 runs with Bengal still having seven wickets in hand with final day's play remaining.
The hosts were 108/3 in their second innings at close of play on the third day. Opener, A Eswaran was not out on 20, while wicket-keeper Shreevats Goswami, who scored a crucial century in the first innings, was unbeaten on 15.
Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary (8) was once again dismissed cheaply, while Sudip Chatterjee (35) and Abhishek Raman (10) failed to go on after having got a start. Debutant Lakshay Garg picked up two wickets while Felix Alemao took one wicket.
Earlier, Goa's innings came to a close at 310 runs in 105 overs after starting the day at overnight position of 191/5 with Amogh on 53 and Keenan Vaz on 40. Both batsmen played cautiously as the last recognised batting pair in the Goan line-up. Goa lost their sixth wicket in the form of Keenan in the 85th over of their innings after the wicket-keeper had scored 60 (111 balls, eight boundaries). It also ended the 110 runs partnership with Amogh for the sixth wicket.
Amogh went on to score his sixth First-class hundred in 261 balls with support from tail-enders Heramb Parab (29) and Amulya Pandrekar (11) spending valuable time at the crease, in a potentially match-saving effort. The 25-year-old right-hander had a string of poor scores (12, 1, 52, 17*, 8, 14, 14 & 35*) before heading into the last league match of the Ranji Trophy
season.
Amogh (103 off 264b, 14 boundaries) was stranded as Goa lost their last-man Felix Alemao for 4 at the total of 310. Ashoke Dinda was the highest wicket-taker for Bengal with figures of 33-10-79-5, while Kanishk Seth claimed three wickets. B Amit took two wickets.
Goa coach Prakash Mayekar praised Amogh for his wonderful effort. "It was a brilliant century by Amogh in pretty tough conditions with the ball swinging all the time. Keenan too batted well," said Mayekar, adding that Goa could have had another wicket on the day had Goswami been given out caught behind. The coach also praised Lakshay and Felix for putting Bengal under pressure to start their second
innings.
