MARGAO
The Arnold Seva Kendra (ASK) Goa, in collaboration with the Chotanagpur Youth Group, successfully organized a spirited 5-a-side football tournament at the SVD Seminary Ground in Raia, drawing enthusiastic participation and promoting inclusivity through sport.
A standout feature of the event was the mandatory inclusion of at least two girls on the field per team, a progressive move aimed at encouraging gender equality and inclusiveness in grassroots sports.
The tournament saw 11 teams from across Goa battle it out in a high-energy competition inaugurated by Fr. Innocent Fernandes, SVD, Rector of SVD Seminary, with a ceremonial kick-off. Teams displayed exceptional skill, passion, and teamwork as they vied for a spot in the semi-finals.
Emerging from the league rounds, the top four teams—Verna, Varca, Olaulim, and Pompurpa—advanced to the semifinals. In closely fought matches, Pompurpa defeated Verna, and Varca outplayed Olaulim, setting up an electrifying final showdown.
The final match was a thrilling encounter, ending in a 2-2 draw during regulation time. The title was ultimately decided by a tense penalty shootout, where Varca emerged victorious, claiming the championship. Verna secured third place, narrowly defeating Olaulim in the third-place playoff.
The event was attended by Fr. Caetano, SVD, and Fr. Roque, SVD, who encouraged and interacted with the young athletes. Fr. Michael Pereira, SVD, the chief organizer, extended heartfelt thanks to Prakash and the Verna Chotanagpur Youth for their dedicated efforts. He also acknowledged the support of the SVD Fathers for generously providing the venue, and the SVD Seminarians for their behind-the-scenes assistance.
