Christians from different denominations observed a day-long fast in Belagavi on Friday as a mark of protest against the proposed 'Anti-Conversion Law' to be implemented by the Karnataka government.
The bill is likely to be introduced early next week during the ongoing winter session of the Karnataka State Legislature. Karnataka Minister for Sugar, Shivram Hebbar, who accepted the memorandum on behalf of the government, said he would bring the plight of Christians in the state to the notice of Chief Minister Bommai on Monday.
Former CM and leader of opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramiah has termed the proposed bill as "unconstitutional" and also condemned the attacks on Christians in the state criticising the BJP government stating that the safety of citizens is the government's responsibility.
Former MLC and chief whip in the Karnataka Legislative Council Ivan D'souza who played a vital role in getting prominent leaders to the fasting venue strongly criticised the BJP government.
After gathering at the Methodist Church Compound here, Christians under the leadership of Bishop Derek Fernandes, former MLC Ivan D'Souza, Rev. Nandakumar and Prashanth Jathanna left for the designated venue at tent no 5 near Suvarna Soudha. Pastors, priests, nuns and Christians from different parts of Karnataka took part in the protests.
Addressing the protesters, Bishop Derek Fernandes expressed anguish over the plight of Christians in Karnataka. Rev. Nandakumar, Prashanth Jathanna and others also expressed deep concerns over the proposed law by the Karnataka government, terming it unnecessary as such laws already prevail in the Indian Constitution.
Sanctity, spiritual songs and prayers marked the day-long protests which culminated at around 4 pm.
