The Goan Derby is set to steal the spotlight as Churchill Brothers FC take on their archrivals Dempo Sports Club in an exciting I-League clash at the Raia Sports Complex on Wednesday. This high-stakes encounter promises to be a thrilling spectacle filled with tradition, rivalry, and tactical nuances.
Both teams have faced challenges in their I-League campaigns so far, but Churchill Brothers FC head coach Dimitris Dimitriou expressed confidence following their recent victory over Inter Kashi. However, he emphasized that the focus now is solely on the upcoming match. "Our players are ready, and I believe we are in a good space after our last match. But now, all that matters is tomorrow's game," said Dimitriou.
The coach further highlighted the importance of working at an increased pace, noting that every member of the team is committed to giving their best. "We succeeded in defeating Inter Kashi, which was an important victory for us to stay competitive in the league and continue our upward momentum," he added. Dimitriou also praised Dempo as a tough opponent, saying, "Dempo are a good team with players who have a fighting spirit. This match will not be easy."
After nearly a decade, the two most celebrated clubs in Goa's football history will meet in the I-League. With 22 previous encounters, Dempo holds the upper hand with 13 wins and 7 draws. However, Churchill Brothers, sitting at the top of the table with 10 points, are level with Dempo on points but lead on goal difference, making this derby a crucial battle for supremacy. Dempo, in second place, will aim to rise to the top, while Churchill Brothers will look to extend their strong form.
Dempo enters the match on the back of a 1-0 victory over Sreenidi Deccan, with Damian Perez scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. Meanwhile, Churchill Brothers are looking to maintain their momentum following a commanding 3-1 win over Inter Kashi, where Lekay, Gassama, and Lamgoulen found the back of the net to hand Kashi their first defeat of the season. Both teams have three wins, one draw, and one loss.
Dempo head coach Samir Naik expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, saying, "I am happy about the 10 points we've collected from away games. But I feel we can still do better." He also spoke about the growing cohesion within the team, saying, "The players have settled in well, especially the new signings. The combination is better, and we are excited for the game. Our supporters are also excited, and it's great to see everyone so motivated."
Although Dempo will miss a couple of key players due to injuries, Naik remains confident, stating, "We have players who can step in and replace the injured ones."
Aditya Barros, General Manager of Churchill Brothers FC, urged the fans to turn out in full support, especially as the match will be held at their home ground. "Our fans are always our biggest motivation, and we hope they come out in full force to cheer us on for a positive result," said Barros.
