The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) ground at Colva, a few metres from the iconic Colva beach, appears to be facing neglect, with the condition of the playing area and perimeter fencing raising concerns over the maintenance of one of South Goa’s sports facilities.
The ground, meant for sporting activities, is surrounded by overgrown vegetation, while portions of the wire-mesh fencing are visibly damaged, bent and deteriorating.
The condition of the fencing is particularly concerning as it serves as a safety barrier around the facility. Several sections appear to be badly damaged and in need of repair or replacement. The overgrown vegetation inside and around the playing area also raises questions about the regular upkeep of the facility.
An elected representative, who did not wish to be quoted, said the ground had remained largely unused for sporting activities.
“For years the grounds have been neglected, and no sporting activities take place for most of the year. Occasionally, it hosts the inter-village football tournament. It is used mostly for non-sporting activities such as festivals organised by the Goa Tourism Department,” the representative said.
The use of the ground for events and festivals also raises questions about its maintenance for regular sporting activities and whether adequate attention is being given to the facility between events.
The condition of the Colva ground raises questions over when it was last inspected, when the existing fencing was installed or repaired, and how much has been spent on its maintenance over the years.
There are also questions over whether any maintenance or renovation proposal has been prepared for the facility and whether the ground is currently considered fit and safe for regular sporting activities.
SAG is responsible for maintaining sports infrastructure under its jurisdiction. The authority’s attention is required to assess the condition of the playing area and fencing, clear the overgrown vegetation and undertake necessary repairs to ensure the facility remains usable for local sporting communities.
