Cuncolim Warriors edged past Goa Velha Saints 1-0 in the GFA Vedanta Women's League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Thursday. Vailanka D'Souza scored the winning goal that also brought her the most valuable player award.
Cuncolim Warriors started the stronger of the two and pressed on from the word go. The Warriors were missing the services of their striker Somaya Mukundar, but nothing seemed to have stopped them as they got the lead in the 25th minute through Vailanka D'Souza, who tapped the ball over the rival goalkeeper in an one-on-one situation. Vailanka had earlier, failed to time her run as the Saints goalkeeper was quick to clear the danger, but she made amends with the crucial goal, later in the first half.
The Saints then had their best spell, but failed to find the equaliser as Avia Vas' shot off a free-kick went straight to the Cuncolim goalie. In the 30th minute, Cuncolim came close to doubling their lead through Vailanka. However, she failed to make a timely pass to an unmarked Anushka Viegas in the box.
In the second half, Goa Velha Saints had a chance but Tercy Pinto's shot was cleared by Malvita Mascarenhas of Cuncolim.
