Midfielder Ladson Fernandes' superb 62nd-minute strike from a free-kick helped Curtorim Gymkhana taste their first win in the Taca Goa Under-20 League with a 1-0 win over Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem at SAG grounds, Assolna on Wednesday. Curtorim now have three points from five matches while Guardian Angel are yet to register a point in their five matches.
Guardian Angel were the better of the two teams at the start of the game and set about attacking with purpose. They threatened time and again but were unable to make the most of their chances They had chances with striker Alvito Moura who controlled the ball well and draw out Guardian Angel Sports Club goalkeeper Christo Hilario but he hit the rival defender in the early moments of the game. As the match progressed, Guardian Angel Sports Club were looking to attack and test the Curtorim Gymkhana defence.
Guardian Angel made a couple of openings during the first 20 minutes of the first half but Jaison Dias and Neville Soares spurned chances with only Curtorim Gymkhana goalkeeper Lokesh Kamani to beat, they shot wide .
Curtorim Gymkhana were more dominant in the second half with their midfielders and forwards working in tandem to put the rival defence under tremendous pressure.
Guardian Angel had a chance to surge ahead but Neville Soares shot wide from hand-shaking distance. Later, Alvito Moura who outwitted a couple of defenders but shot wide from ideal position after Mairon Fernandes laid him on a platter.
The all-important goal came in the 62nd minute when Ladson Fernandes' well executed free-kick grazed the cross bar and eluded Guardian Angel goalkeeper Christo Hilario. Thereafter, Curtorim Gymkhana took control of the game and pressed for the second goal when midfielder Ladson Fernandes' shot was well blocked by Guardian Angel's Christo Hilario. Midway in the second half, Ladson Fernandes had a golden chance to increase the tally but he shot wide much to the disbelief of Curtorim Gymkhana.
In the injury time, Guardian Angel fluffed a golden chance to level the score when Rojef Colaco fed substitute Allan Fernandes inside the rival penalty box. However, Curtorim Gymkhana goalkeeper Lokesh Kamani came to his side's rescue by diving at the feet of Allan and averted the danger.
