A splendid brace by attacking midfielder Francis Andrade helped Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda to thump hosts Cuncolim Union 3-1 and emerge champions of 9th All Goa Cuncolim Union Trophy inter village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union at Government School ground, Cuncolim on Saturday. Don Bosco led 2-1 at the break.
At the start it looked like it might be an even contest with both teams comfortable in possession. But the Fatorda team soon switched gears as they pressed forward and harried C
uncolim Union, forcing them to concede possession in their own half. The opener arrived when Kevin Araujao headed home off a well taken flag kick by Cliff Baretto.
Stung by that setback as they were backed by home crowd, Cuncolim Union regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp. Within nine minutes, Bharat Gaonkar neutralised the lead off a Frazier Fernandes assist.
Stunned by the equaliser, Don Bosco Oratory went into the attacking mode with their forwards troubling the rival defence with well-orchestrated raids. Francis Andrade, who played a stellar role for his team, regained the lead in the 22nd minute when he picked up the ball from Wellington D'Souza and foxed two defenders to unleash a left-footed drive which gave no chance to the Cuncolim Union goalkeeper Shaikh Shaeel.
At the other end, Cuncolim Union too had their share of chances and looked to level the score but striker Bharat Gaonkar hit wide from close range. The change of ends made little difference to the pattern of play as Don Bosco Oratory found their third goal when Ashley Araujao floated the ball inside the rival box and Francis Andrade made no mistake in nodding the ball past goalkeeper Shaikh Saheel.
Down 1-3, Cuncolim Union went all out and came close to reducing the margin when Micky Fernandes unleashed a stiff shot. However Don Bosco Oratory goalkeeper rose to the occasion to fist away the ball, conceding a flag kick. With the time running out, Cuncolim Union fired on all cylinders but the Fatorda rearguard was alert and strong to avert the danger.
Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda were richer by Rs 40,000 and a trophy while hosts Cuncolim Union had to settle for Rs 30,000 and a glittering trophy.
Arjuna Awardee and former India captain Brahmanand Sankhwalkar was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour, Cuncolim MLA Clafasio Dias, Elvis Gomes, president of GFA, and special invitees Mahesh Gawli, Dilip Sardessai, former India defender, Freddy Mascarenhas, ex-Salgaocar FC footbller and Micky Fernandes, ex-Air India, Dempo, Sporting Clube de Goa and Guardian Angel player, and GFA executive members Anthony Pango and Raju Banaulikar
