An injury-time goal by Man of the match Larryl Mascarenhas helped Dempo Sports Club colts edge past Youth Club of Manora 2-1 in a Geno-GFA First Division League match at Rosary ground, Navelim on Sunday. All the goals were scored in the second half.
With this win, the Dempo colts collected 8 points from 4 matches, while Youth Club of Manora suffered their first defeat and stay at 3 points from the same number of outings Youth Club of Manora consisting of experienced players produced a strong fighting display and managed to match the Dempo colts and the first half finished goalless. The Dempo colts nearly broke the deadlock early but Baggio Fernandes’ header missed the mark narrowly, off a well measured lob from
Rajat Harijan.
A couple of minutes later, Myron Fernandes’ snap shot was blocked by Wasim Shaikh. At the other end, the Dempo colts conjured up an attack and Ryan Pinto’s free kick was dealt with by the Manora goalkeeper Swizel Pereira.
However after the change of ends, Dempo broke the Youth Club of Manora resistance in the 47th minute when Aniston Costa beat goalkeeper Swizel with a 35-yard snap shot. In search of an equaliser, Manora initiated some attacks and the rival fort fell in the 58th minute when Dempo goalkeeper Wasim Shaikh committed a blunder when he collected the ball outside the box and assistant referee Santano Furtado spotted the offence and alerted referee John Rebello, who awarded a free kick to Manora. The free kick was curled in by veteran Francis Andrade to make it 1-1.
After levelling the scores, Youth Club of Manora enjoyed better ball possesion and nearly found the lead but Myron Fernandes’ shot was well blocked by the rival goalkeeper. The Manora lads squandered an easy chance when Shaikh Safik wasted his header off Danny Fernandes with only the rival goalkeeper to beat.
The Dempo colts scored the match winner in the injury time through a strike from Larryl Mascarenhas. Cletus Pinto ran down the left flank and sent a low cross inside the box and Larryl collected it and pushed the ball into the net.
