Dempo SC Juniors finished their engagements in the Geno GFA’s First Division League on a triumphant note when they came from behind to defeat Cuncolim Union 2-1 at SAG Artificial Turf, Fatorda on Wednesday. In another match, Velsao Sports & Cultural Club scraped past United Club of Telaulim 2-1 at Navelim.
Cuncolim Union started the game on an attacking note and rocked the rival citadel in the 6th minute when Sclachie Cardozo beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat placement as the rival defender committed a defensive lapse. The goal enlivened Cuncolim Union to mount pressure on the rival goal, but the Dempo defenders were alert in frustrating rival attackers. Cuncolim Union medio Shubham Malvankar was in his elements as he sprayed accurate passes to keep his forwards busy and managed to create a solo run for himself when he outwitted couple of defenders but his attempt missed the mark narrowly.
After the resumption, Dempo made sporadic raids and just two minutes into the second half, Sachin Gawas raced from the midfield and took the ball into the final third before quickly passing the ball to Aaron Alvares. The last-named cut inside from the left and took the Cuncolim defence by surprise when he opted to pass instead of shooting. His dummy had left the rival defenders on the floor as the ball slipped into the path of Norman, who had the easiest of finishes to put his team on equal terms in the 47th minute.
The equaliser boosted the morale of Dempo Jrs and they tormented the rival defence with sharp raids as they looked for the winning goal. Sachin Gawas sped down 20 yards and unleashed the shot into the roof of the net in the 86th minute.
Meanwhile, in a keenly-contested affair, a late strike from Manushan Fernandes ensured Velsao Sports & Cultural Club scraped past United Club of Telaulim 2-1 at Rosary Ground, Navelim.
Telaulim went ahead in the 12th minute when striker Joel Dias slottted past the rival goalkeeper with a snapshot. Velsao equalised in the 37th minute when striker Agnelo Colaco punished the rival goalkeeper with a neat finish off Savio Fernandes.
Velsao launched a series of attacks and in the 53rd minute, Manushan Fernandes got the winning goal.
