Dempo Sports Club put on a mesmerising attacking display as they handed Churchill Brothers Sports Club a 4-0 thrashing in the Goa Zone AIFF U-13 Youth League at Holy Trinity ground, Benaulim on Sunday. Dempo colts led 2-0 at the lemon break.
Dempo were the better team and were off the blocks early as they dominated the game and enjoy more possession. The Panaji outfit played with more flair and rocked the rival citadel in the 14th minute when Sherwin Abranches slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a curling ball from six yards box. Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Jay Sharma tried to hold onto the ball but he ended up landing behind the line while
catching it.
Dempo scored their second in the 30th minute when Atmaram Jhadav punished the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish. At the other end, Churchill Brothers were subdued and failed to function as a cohesive unit and surrendered to the challenge meekly without giving any fight.
The proceedings in the second half continued in same vein as Dempo looked comfortable with keeping possession. However, Dempo were reduced to 10 men early into the second half after Atmaram Jadhav got his second yellow for a late tackle on rival player Clarence Fernandes.
But despite enjoying the numerical advantage, Churchill Brothers conceded another goal in the 54th minute. A shot from distance, an otherwise routine collection for a keeper, was spilled by Churchill keeper Jay and Aman Kumar steered it into the net.
Dempo defended stoutly and didn't allow Churchill attackers to have a go at the goal. One of the few Churchill chances fell to Danish Shaikh, whose weak shot rolled slowly into Dempo goalkeeper Sail Parulekar's hands. Churchill lost their goalkeeper to an injury but his replacement Mohammad Khan did manage to keep the score down to three when he showed quick reflexes to catch a thundering shot from Dwayne Netto that hit the underside of the post before the goalie held onto it.
But Khan could do nothing when Netto fired the last nail into the rival coffin in the added-on time. With this win, Dempo Sports Club top the group with six points from two matches.
