DULER

It was another poor performance from Football Club de Bardez as they went down to Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 4-1 in their last GFA Goa Professional League match at Duler Stadium, here on Saturday.

Cavelossim’s Alvito Miranda netted a hat-trick to blow away Bardez challenge after Mathew Colaco had equalised for the South Goans after Chatur Naik gave the Pink Brigade the lead. With this win, Cavelossim climbed one place to 10th with 15 points from 18 matches, while Bardez ended their campaign with just 18 points from 22 outings.

Bardez in-charge Climax Lawrence started with Jessel Carneiro, Joywin Carneiro and Clinton Niasso in the Starting XI after being thrashed by Churchill Brothers SC in their last match, while the opposition coach Severino Fernandes made just one change by starting with Ashley Araujo after their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Calangute Association in the previous

round match.

Cavelossim would have opened their account within the first 10 minutes, but Alvito Miranda’s 30-yard strike was superbly saved by Bardez keeper David Chauhan. In the 17th minute, Bardez stunned their opponents by surging ahead. Chatur Naik’s lobbed shot from just inside the box found the far post to enter the goal, 1-0.

Just a few minutes later, Bardez had a chance to double their lead when Inacio Colaco found Clinton in the box but the latter failed miserably to direct his placement past Cavelossim keeper Razak Devsor. At the other end, Cavelossim striker Mathew Colaco levelled terms for his side in the 26th minute when he coolly placed the ball between Bardez keeper David and defenders from inside 6 yards to make it 1-1 for the South Goan club.

Cavelossim should have extended their lead in the 34th minute when Alvito was left with just the keeper to beat but Bardez custodian David came off his line to deny the striker in a one-on-one. However in the 40th minute, keeper David could do very little to prevent Alvito from scoring with a shot from just outside the 6-yard box to make it 2-1 for Cavelossim.

On crossing over, in the 56th minute, Alvito should have further increased their lead when he was set up by Mathew inside the penalty box with just keeper David to beat, but the Bardez custodian made a brilliant save. In the 64th minute, Alvito was not to be denied as he netted his brace after Allwyn Vaz’s shot was blocked by keeper David and the ball rolled to Alvito, who slotted the ball home to make it 3-1 for Cavelossim.

Just ten minutes later, Alvito completed his hat-trick when substitute Semson Fernandes sent a perfect through pass from the left to the striker, who guided the ball into the back of the net, 4-1. In the 81st minute Bardez were reduced to 10 men when their striker Clinton kicked rival defender Cayven Araujo and referee Melroy D’Souza gave him the marching orders with a direct red card.

FC Goa set sights on Super Cup

BASIL SYLVESTER PINTO  MARGAO  It seems only like yesterday, a plentitude of passionate FC Goa fans were disillusioned that their side came a cropper at the second last hurdle in Chennai. But in reality, it was less than three weeks ago that FC Goa by a fair distance emerged second best in the 180-minute home-and-away double semi-final leg duel against their familiar foes and eventual title winners, Chennaiyin FC, losing on a 1-4 aggregate.  Cut…
