Former India international Alvito D’Cunha is delighted about his selection for the state sports honour in the form of ‘Bakshi Bahaddar Jivabadada Kerkar Award’. Expressing his gratitude, the 39-year-old former midfielder dedicated the award to his family.
“The announcement of Kerkar Award was something different, I cannot explain it in words. There is nothing bigger than this award, it’s the highest honour (in Goa). It finally felt as if I had done something for my state and my government has recognised my efforts and rewarded me,” Alvito told The Goan Everyday on Tuesday.
The Curchorem-based footballer dedicated the award to his family. “If not for their support, all this would not have been possible. Over the years, all my coaches and my team-mates have contributed a lot to shape my career. I will never forget their contribution and help. Hence this award is solely dedicated to my family,” said the former East Bengal star.
“I thank everyone for recognising my achievements and I promise that I would strive harder to help my club East Bengal to win the maiden I-League title,” added D’Cunha, who played for Sesa Goa and Salgaocar before leaving for Kolkata.
D’Cunha, who began his career at Salcete Football Club, went on to win 11 titles in 14 seasons in the Red-and-Gold ranks as a player, having played for East Bengal as a left-winger for 14 years. He retired in 2016 and has since been in coaching staff of the Kolkata giants.
Alvito’s former India international mates, Mahesh Gawli and Samir Naik will also be presented Kerkar Award on January 25 at the NIO Auditorium, Dona Paula
at 4 pm.
