Taking cognisance of a complaint that came from the students of the new men’s hostel at the Goa University (GU), the Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) last week raided the canteens and mess of the GU, and shut down the mess at the new men’s hostel, after allegedly charging those running it a fine of Rs 3,00,000.

Alternative solutions for meals have now been made for the students who used to eat at the mess.

A team from the FDA raided the canteens/mess at the GU after students residing at the men’s hostel got together and sent a complaint to the director of the FDA Jyoti Sardessai regarding the sub-standard quality of food provided.

Explaining the meaning of “poor quality”, the complainants wrote, that besides the food being “cold, tasteless and not cooked properly,”, they had even found “bad stuff like hair, worm and fly” in their food quite a few times.

Due to this, they claimed that many resident students had fallen ill. The students even attached a photo of a cockroach found in the breakfast of a student as proof.

The complaint filed by the students said that though they had approached the mess staff to “clear the matter regarding the decline in food quality,” the staff had remained “indifferent” and that the quality of food had kept on deteriorating.

The students reached out to the FDA as a last resort to help them in whatever way possible. ‘The Goan’ was unsuccessful in contacting the warden of the men’s hostel.

Director of the FDA Jyoti Sardessai did not respond to a request for comment.
