FC Goa overcame Churchill Brothers Sports Club 2-1 in the All India Football Federation’s Under-13 Youth League at Chowgule College Artificial ground on Sunday. All the goals were scored in the second half. Salgeo Dias and Francisco Fernandes were the goal-getters for FC Goa, while Oscar Braganza scored the consolation goal for Churchill Brothers.
FC Goa held the upper hand in the opening session and their forwards made umpteen forays into the rival territory and came close to scoring when striker Rayan Mendes’ effort was palmed away by Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Jay Sharma. FC Goa’s David Fernandes unleashed a snap shot but it did not trouble the Churchill Brothers goalkeeper. In another good move, striker Salgeo Fernandes broke free from the rival defenders but his shot missed the mark narrowly.
At the other end, Churchill Brothers brought in fresh legs as Siddhesh Mandage came in place of Bryan Pinto to add more teeth in the ineffective attack. FC Goa then had another chance when Sahil Inamdar’s fierce shot was saved by Jay in Churchill goal. Churchiil colts suffered a jolt when Nathan Rodrigues got injured after being caught in a melee but the teams went into the break goalless.
Post resumption, FC Goa continued in same vein with striker Salgeo keeping Churchill goalie busy. FC Goa’s breakthrough came in the 41st minute when Salegeo benefited form a rival defender’s error and finished with a neat finish. Davis’ header then missed the Churchill goal by a few inches and Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Jay came to his side’s rescue by thwarting rival striker Sahil
Inamdar.
FC Goa doubled the lead in the 48th minute when Franciso Fernandes’ blistering shot beat the rival goalkeeper all ends up. Churchill did manage to reduce the margin through the boots of Oscar Braganza in the 62nd minute.
