The Selection Committee meeting for the prestigious Dilip Sardessai Sports Excellence Award has announced the cancellation of the award for the year 2023“24 due to a lack of worthy candidates. The meeting, chaired by the Secretary of Sports, Government of Goa, convened at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim on August 22.
The Secretary of Sports mentioned that since the stature of the award is high, it should be given to players with medal performances and not mere participation. Other committee members agreed with the secretary of sports and were of the view that none of the four applicants qualified to be conferred the award. The award ceremony, previously scheduled for August 29, 2023, has now been canceled.
The Selection Committee meeting included the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, the Executive Director (SAG), Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Brahmanand Sankhwalkar, and the Secretary General of the Goa Olympic Association, Gurudatta Bhakta.
