Churchill Brothers Sports Club put up a dogged display and managed to overcome Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao 1-0 in the GFA Pro League at Government School playground, Ambelim on Monday. Striker Doyl D'Silva scored the all important goal in the 83rd minute to give Churchill Brothers their third victory.
Taleigao started the game in attacking mode and created three scoring chances during the first 25 minutes of the game. Gautam Dias sent a dangerous cross but Ocatavio Miranda failed take the chance with only Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Aliston Fernandes at his mercy. Later, Gopi Gad's feeble push from close range went straight into the hands of Aliston and Gourav Kankonkar's shot flew over the crossbar after Octavio Miranda's header went into his path.
In the 35th minute, Talegiao's plea for a penalty was turned down by referee Xavier Clemente after Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Alliston Fernandes appeared to foul striker Ocatavio Miranda inside the penalty box going for a cross from Gourav Kankonkar.
On the other hand, Churchill Brothers came up with a noteworthy move in the 38th minute when Basant Rai's floater from the right was beautifully floated inside the rival penalty box and striker Doyl D'Silva's header went straight into the hands of goalkeeper Rohan Shaikh. With half time approaching, Taleigao had a chance to break the deadlock but Gautam Dias could only manage a feeeble shot from close distance which didn't trouble Aliston Fernandes in Churchill goal.
Post resumption, Taleigao continued to enjoy ball possession but could not threaten the rival goal. Meanwhile, Churchill came close to breaking the impasse but substitute Semson Fernandes' unimpressive snap shot went wide after Suraj laid him on the platter. The match decider finally arrived in the 87th minute. Following a throw in by Basant Rai from the left, substitute Divyansh Sudhan headed it between the legs of Taleigao goalkeeper Rohan and Doyl D'Silva finished with an easy tap-in to give Churchill the three points.
With this win, Churchill Brothers went up to 10 points from 10 matches while Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao stay at three points from 11 matches.
