An instrumental factor in FC Goa’s fairly impressive performance in ISL 2017-18 with his fine ball reading and distribution skills, Spaniard Edu Bedia looks forward to a good FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 without picking out any favourites.
“There are a number of expectations from various teams and from the host nation. I think we will enjoy a great tournament,” the FC Goa central midfielder giving his impressions on the forthcoming quadrennial showpiece said.
“The economic investment for this particular edition of this prestigious tournament has been huge,” the former Spanish Youth team international added.
Reminiscing on his earliest World Cup memory, centrifugal force of the Gaurs was all nostalgia on the 1994 edition. “Brazil was victorious that year and from my perspective, Romario was the best player at the tournament. When I was much younger, he was my favourite player,” the Spaniard revealed.
For Bedia, he looks no further than the World Cup 2010 final between Spain and Netherlands held in South Africa for a personal favourite. “The match, in particular was very pleasing for me. Just the manner in which that game played out, going to extra time and Andres Iniesta coming through to score a late winner, was so exhilarating,” the wiry footballer gushed.
For this particular edition, he divulged that he would be keeping an eye on the matches of the heavyweight teams like Spain, Argentina, Brazil and Germany. Like many around the world, Bedia singles out Argentine star player Lionel Messi as the player to watch out for. Speaking further, he opined that his country, Spain may not have great names but collectively, it is one of the best teams.
Bedia is particularly pleased that viewership for people across the world is made feasible by the scheduling of the matches for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup in Russia. “Considering this edition of the tournament, I would like to emphasise that with these schedules, people from all over the world will be able to follow it. The time difference between countries has been kept in mind while scheduling this event. It could become one of the most viewed editions in history,” the lanky medio predicted.
