As the Indian Super League (ISL) charges forward into another gripping gameweek, all eyes turn to the clash between FC Goa and Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
Scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 pm, the PJN Stadium in Fatorda, the Gaurs’ home turf, is set to host what promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of the most prominent names in the league at the moment. With Goa firmly entrenched in the upper echelons of the league table and Mohun Bagan eager to climb higher, the result of this upcoming contest will have a big impact on the eventual standings.
With eight victories and four draws, the Manolo Marquez-coached side have been on a roll since the offset of the ISL campaign. They (28) are merely three points adrift of the Juggernauts (31) despite playing three (12) fewer games than Sergio Lobera & Co (15).
Winning this game, they will get level on points with Odisha FC and thus replace them at the pole position, thus staking a realistic claim of lifting the League Winners Shield. The team had inflicted mayhem upon the Mariners the last time these teams clashed in the ISL in December. Winning 4-1 courtesy of a Noah Sadaoui brace, the Gaurs made light work of the Kolkata-based side at the Salt Lake Stadium.
"We are fully aware of the strength and quality Mohun Bagan Super Giant bring to the field. They have several players that can decide the fate of the game with just one action,” stated FC Goa’s Head Coach Manoel Marquez. "They won the first five games of their campaign, and were then regarded as favourites to win the title.
“All of this said, our focus has to remain on ourselves. We know perfectly well that this will be a difficult game for us, so we are thinking only about playing our way. That way, we know that this will be a difficult match for them too,” he further added.
