Former Chinchinim Veteran Club defender Jeremias Barretto was laid to rest at the Our Lady of Hope Church Cemetery in Chinchinim following his untimely demise after a road accident earlier this month.
The funeral was attended by family members, friends and several members of Goa's football fraternity, who gathered to pay their final respects to the 66-year-old former footballer and veteran football player.
Jeremias is survived by his wife, Valentina alias Roma, and his children Cathlen, Alton, Valdney, Murphy, Janrica, Issaih and Glenys.
The funeral Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim.
Paying tribute, Goa Football Association Senior Vice-President Anthony Pango said, "Jeremias is no more, but his contribution to Goa's veteran football will never be forgotten. I share the grief of his family during this difficult time."
Former India captain and Dempo Sports Club head coach Mauricio Afonso also expressed his condolences, saying, "It is sad that Barretto is no longer among us. His invaluable contribution to veteran football will always be remembered. I share the family's grief."
Former Salgaocar FC footballer Ignatius Dias described Barretto as a dedicated footballer whose achievements would continue to inspire others. "My condolences to his family. We pray that his soul rests in peace," he said.
As a mark of respect, members of CRC Chinchinim placed a wreath on Barretto's mortal remains. The tribute was led by club members and panchas Valentine Barretto and Frank Viegas, along with the Vice-President of the Chinchinim Village Panchayat.
