Fr Agnel Multipurpose High School, Verna and Guardian Angel Higher Secondary School emerged winners at the 6th Meccabeus Rodrigues Memorial Under 14 and Under 17 inter-school football one-day tournament respectively. The tournament was organised by Fr Agnel Youth Centre, Pilar at Fr Agnel High School grounds, recently.
In the Under 17 finals, Guardian Angel HSS defeated Fr Agnel Multipurpose HSS by a solitary goal. The all-important match-winner was scored off a stunning direct free kick by the team's captain Joytion Fernandes which gave the rival goalkeeper no chance. Fr Agnel Multipurpose HSS dominated much of the proceedings after the goal, but all their efforts went in vain as Guardian Angel were able to keep a clean sheet.
The Under 14 finals did not see any goals in the regulation time as both the teams, Don Bosco High School Panjim and Fr Agnel Multipurpose High School, Verna had a cautious approach and most of the play was confined to the midfield. Fr Agnel Multipurpose were the team that was more likely to score a goal but their repeated attacks on goal were thwarted by the rock solid Don Bosco defence. In the tie-breaker, Fr Agnel were the better shooters and won the match 4-3.
Fr Jack Dias, Parish Priest of St Mary’s Parish, Vancouver Canada was the chief guest. Also among those present were Francis Silveira (Ex MLA St Andre constituency), Juliana Gurjao e Colaco (Ex Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Affairs), Francisca Rodrigues(wife of Late Meccabeus Rodrigues), Fr Fredrick Rodrigues (President, Fr Agnel Youth Centre,Pilar), Fr Andrew Silveira (Secretary, Fr Agnel Youth Centre), Fr Richard Crasto (Headmaster, Fr Agnel High School, Pilar), Fr Victor Rebello, Fr Seby Rodrigues, Fr Nirmaldo Fernandes, Fr Paixao Gonsalves, Fr Salvador Fernandes.
