A solitary early goal from Steve Menezes proved decisive as Fr. Agnelo Sports and Cultural Club Paroda edged out St Sebastian Youth Club Murida 1-0 to clinch the Cavelossim Panchayat Cup 2026, organised by Santa Cruz Club Cavelossim, at the Fr. Druston and Wellington ground in Cavelossim.
Both sides adopted an attacking approach, with Paroda forwards Godwin Fernandes and Livan Clemente posing a constant threat, though Murida goalkeeper Royston Colaco made several fine saves to keep his side in the contest.
Murida nearly took the lead in the fifth minute when Cliff Barreto’s diagonal pass found Joston Dias, whose effort struck the post and went out. Paroda capitalised soon after, as Salvin Fernandes surged forward and delivered a precise pass into the box. Steve Menezes controlled the ball, beat his marker, and fired a powerful shot past the goalkeeper to score the match-winner.
After the break, Murida pressed hard for an equaliser. Their best chance came when Richi Vaz set up Hanslum Furtado, but his attempt lacked power and was comfortably collected by the Paroda keeper. In the closing stages, Paroda had opportunities to extend their lead, but Midroy Menezes and Aswan Fernandes failed to convert. Strong defending led by captain Kanchan Kiro and Rayan Menezes ensured Paroda held on for victory.
The winners, Paroda, received Rs 60,000 along with the rolling trophy and winners’ trophy, while Murida were awarded Rs 40,000 and the runners-up trophy, sponsored by V.P. Cavelossim.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by chief guest Alexio Reginald Lourenco, MLA of Curtorim and Chairman of GIDC. Fr. Ubaldo Fernandes, Parish Priest, was the guest of honour.
Other dignitaries present included Jesus Costa, John Barreto, Swivel Barreto, Iris Passanha, VP Secretary John Colaco, Joel Afonso, and Viola Costa. Alexio Lourenco and long-serving Panch member John Barreto were felicitated.
Vice Chairman Viriato Mendes and President Raju Cardozo coordinated the programme. Gracias Melodies entertained the crowd, Natty Fernandes compered the event, and Secretary Francis Rodrigues delivered the vote of thanks.
