The winning run of St Sebastian Sports Club, Mapuca, came to a halt as they went down fighting to Friends XI Vaddem, 1-2 in the Goa Football Association’s Third Division League at Duler grounds, here on Wednesday.
Friends XI went into the breather with a one-goal cushion. In the 13th minute, a fine pass by Allwyn Sequeria was tapped into the goal past St Sebastian goalkeeper, Hrushikesh by Amar Kinlekar.
Minutes later, St Sebastian’s Alpesh Bicholkar saw his fierce strike miss the target narrowly.
Friends XI almost doubled their lead when Amar managed to dribble past St Sebastian goalkeeper and sent the ball towards the target, which however, was saved on the goalline by Christo Tete.
At the other end, a chance for an equaliser went in vain as St Sebastian’s Siddha Mandrekar sent a perfect cross only to see it headed wide off the mark by Sattesh Kole.
On crossing over after minutes of midfield play, Friends XI extended their lead when Francis Rodrigues sent a through pass to Sevin Fernandes, who scored in the 72nd minute.
St Sebastian managed to reduce the margin in the 75th minute through a brilliant solo effort by Shramesh Naik, who beat the onrushing Friends goalkeeper Abhijith Volvoikar and tapped the ball home (1-2).
In the 79th minute, St Sebastian lost a golden opportunity to level the terms as Lakshak Gawas failed to guide his header on target off Shane’s cross.
