Goa Yachting Association’s (GYA) Katya Coelho won gold in the IQ Foil Women’s Class at the YAI’s Asian Games selection trials held in Mumbai and secured her top spot and chance to represent India at the upcoming Asian Games in China.
Katya Coelho is the only Goan sailor and the only Goan girl to represent India at Olympics, albeit the Youth Olympics in 2014. She is also the first Indian Women Windsurfer and probably the first Goan girl to represent India at the Asian Games 2018 at Jakarta.
While at the same event, Dayne Coelho who has recently qualified in the RS:X Class for the Asian Games tried his luck at the IQ Foil Men’s Class and won the silver medal for Goa behind Jerome of Army Yachting Node who won the gold.
Pearl Colvalcar of GYA who was participating in the Laser 4.7 youth Girls class, narrowly missed a medal when she finished fifth.
The consistent performance of Goan sailors at the National level spells good omen for Goa’s medal hopes at the upcoming National Games to be hosted in Goa.
