PANAJI: Goa’s Vasco-based squash player Yash Fadte has clinched the RPM Power Aarhus Open title in Denmark, producing an impressive run against a strong international field.
Fadte, representing India, defeated three highly ranked opponents on his way to the championship at one of the prominent tournaments on the Danish squash calendar and the European squash circuit.
In the quarterfinals, Fadte registered a commanding 3-0 victory over Ireland’s No 3 Karl Mcloughney, winning 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.
He continued his winning run in the semifinals, overcoming Denmark’s No 2 Malthe Laursen 3-1 to book his place in the title clash.
The final saw Fadte take on Denmark’s No 1 Magnus Laursen. The Vasco-based player delivered another strong performance to secure a 3-1 victory in 62 minutes. Fadte won the opening two games 11-8 and 18-16 before Laursen pulled one back 7-11. Fadte then closed out the match 11-4 to seal the title.
The tournament attracted strong international participation, with players from Spain, Norway, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Sweden and India, among other countries.
Fadte’s victories over Denmark’s top two players, along with his quarterfinal win against Ireland’s No 3, make the title particularly significant.
The Aarhus Open triumph also provides Fadte with an encouraging start to his season following the summer break. The Goan player has continued to build momentum with strong performances and victories over highly ranked players from different countries.
Fadte will now turn his attention to the PSA Aramis Open in Belgium, which begins in 10 days. He is then scheduled to compete at the PSA Brest Squash Open in Brest, France, in three weeks, where he will face another strong international field.
