Government Higher Secondary School, Sakhali and Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim advanced to the semi-finals of Reliance Foundation Youth Sports National Football Championship finals in Mumbai on Monday.
Government HSS registered their second victory of the tournament, a 6-2 triumph against PT Lee Chengalvaraya HSS, Chennai to make it to the semi-finals of the senior boys category. Kunal Salgaonkar, with four goals to his name, was named the player of the match.
The Goan lads conceded an early advantage to PT Lee HSS, giving away an an own goal early. However, the Goans bounced back as Kunal Salgaonkar pumped in four goals while Uddesh Parab and Cyrus Noronha struck once each.
In the college boys category, Rosary College drubbed Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati 13-1. Captain Samson Simoes scored a double hat-trick to lead his team into the semi-finals of the championship with Snedden Medeira, Neceil Pinto and Merriston Coutinho chipping in. Samson Simoes was named as the player of the match.
Meanwhile, Govt. Higher Secondary School, Panampally-Kochi and Mamta Modern Sr Secondary School, Delhi continued their winning momentum to finish table toppers and qualify for the semi-finals in the Senior Boys category. Father Agnel School and Jr College, also completed the knock-out stage with their third league win.
In the Group A of College Boys section, as expected Nirmala College, Kochi sailed to the semis with ease, defeating Indira College, Pune 7-0. In Group B, Charuchandra College, Kolkata exhibited a spirited performance against Jeppiar College, Chennai (3-1) to earn their first full points and top the table for semi-finals. Thakur College of Science & Commerce, Mumbai were lucky to hold Zakir Husain College, Delhi in a goalless draw and book the last spot in semis.
