MARGAO: Santan Furtado struck the decisive goal as Green Veggies FC got their campaign off to a winning start with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Blue Atlantic in the inaugural GVFC Football League at The King’s School Ground, Davorlim, on Saturday.
The all-important goal came in the 19th minute of the opening session when Remy Colaco delivered a precise pass from the left flank for Santan Furtado, who controlled the ball well before placing it past goalkeeper Hanuman Pednekar.
The first edition of the league was formally inaugurated by GFA Executive Committee member Costancio Paulo Rodrigues and GVFC Treasurer Osvaldo Da Costa, who interacted with players from both teams before kick-off.
The GVFC Football League also features Red Chillies and Yellow Daffodils, who are scheduled to meet at the Santa Cruz Ground on Sunday, June 28.
The inaugural tournament is the brainchild of GVFC under the leadership of President Avertano Furtado, supported by Treasurer Osvaldo Da Costa and General Secretary Francisco X. Souza, along with an organising committee headed by Eddie Fernandes.
The league features players across four age categories, ranging from 45 years to over 60 years. Each match is played over three sessions of 20 minutes each, with short breaks between sessions.
