Goa witnessed a master class from Gustavo to hand Noel a 9-0 drubbing while Santosh powered through with a 9-0 victory over Rahul in the Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias Open 2016 here on Wednesday.
With tennis enthusiasts gathered around the newly renovated blue clay courts, Kevin and Sadguru were engaged in a thrilling battle for supremacy with Glen and Sandeep in the Veterans Doubles category. Kevin and Sadguru got the better of Glen and Sandeep (9-1 ) to progress to the next round while Prema Sherpa pulled off a dominating win over Gurudas Lotlikar (9-1) in the Veterans Singles category to cap off the morning session.
The evening session saw the commencement of the Under 16 category for girls and boys. The budding players took to the courts amidst cheers from their fellow players and close friends. Rujuta was dominant from the first swing of the racket as she notched up a close victory over Shirley (7-5) to progress into the next round of the U-16 girls category. Simultaneously on court 1, Shanley brushed aside Wynona in a one sided game to make it 7-0. In the under 16 boys category Felix and Aron were engaged in long rallies as Aron progressed to the next round with a 7-4 victory.
In another match, Aman convincingly defeated Nehal (7-5) and Jaybhave won 8-6 over Werner. Arnav got the better of Arlindo with a 7-1 win to make it to the next round while Ibtisam won 7-2 over Milisa in the Under 16 girls category.
The tournament commenced with a total of 122 entries coming in across 10 categories. The tournament is being organised by Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias, Goa’s first tennis club in partnership with Goa State Tennis Association (GSTA) and Gadre Premium Seafood. The event will be an annual fixture on the state’s tennis calendar. Spread over five days, matches are scheduled between 7am and ​​10am in the morning and between 4pm and 10pm in the evening. The finals will be held on January 31.
