Holy Trinity Sector defeated St Sebastian Sector 1-0 in the finals to lift the Benaulim Youth Inter-Sector Trophy organised by Prime Sports Club at St John the Baptist Ground, Dando, Benaulim on Sunday.
St Sebastian played with a lot of grit and determination but ultimately the favourites lived up the billing when striker Cannut Fernandes scored the all- important goal in the closing stages of the match.
Holy Trinity picked up the pace early on with playmaker Viraj Morajkar finding gaps in the rival defense for strikers Cannut Fernandes and Calver Fernandes who however were wasteful. St Sebastian goalkeeper Swisfran Silva also made a handful of crucial saves.
For St Sebastian, medio Greto F Rebello and skipper Joseph Fernandes worked hard to stop the flow of rival attacks.
When it appeared the match was drifting towards the tie-breaker, Holy Trinity winger Merwyn Afonso's stiff grounder was parried away by rival goalkeeper Swisfran Silva but striker Cannut Fernandes was on hand to shoot the rebound into the nylons. Before the start of the finals, SSC Top Rankers from Benaulim were awarded the Fr John Correia-Afonso Educational Awards.
Fr Lucio Dias, Parish Priest of St John the Baptist Church and Episcopal Vicar for South Goa was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guests of honour Fr Rocklin D'Costa, Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Church, Fr Benjamin Sacrafamilia, Chaplain of Patrocinio Chapel, Caetano R Silva, MLA of Benaulim Constituency, Dr Wiseman Pinto and Lalita Correia-Afonso. Boaventura C Leitao, Secretary proposed the vote of thanks and Anthony Rodrigues compered.
Holy Trinity were awarded a cash prize of Rs 7,000 and trophy while St Sebastian had to be content with Rs 5,000 and trophy.
