Ilhas Veterans got the better of Guirdolim-Chandor 4-1 in the Sesa-Vedanta Awes 50+ veterans football tournament, at Sinquetim Sports Complex, Navelim.
The match began with Illhas dominating proceedings but found the Guirdolim -Chandor defence a hard nut to crack. In the 15th minute, a defence-splitting pass found Nagesh of Illhas who placed the ball past an on-rushing Guirdolim-Chandor goalkeeper.
Thereafter, Chandor's Rosariomissed an easy tap-in to equalise in the 20th minute. Chandor keeper Osvaldo pulled up two brilliant saves to deny the Illhas attackers.
Changing over, Illhas doubled their lead in the 30th minute through Pascoal who scored defeating the opposition's off-side trap. Hardly had the cheers died down, Guirdolim's Peter scored off a back pass from Illhas defender. In the 40th minute, Nagesh of Illhas scored his second goal to make it 3-1 in favour of Illhas. A full-length dive by Osvaldo in the 43rd minute denied Nagesh a well-deserved hat-trick. The final nail in the Chandor coffin was drilled by Bazino in the 45th minute.
Goa placed in Group A for Santosh trophy
Goa have been placed along with Gujarat in the first phase of the Santosh Trophy National Football Championship. Jammu & Kashmir and Chhattisgarh are the other teams in Group A.
Nine teams from six groups will progress to the final phase which will be held in Arunachal Pradesh. Defending champions Karnataka, runners-up Meghalaya and hosts Arunachal will join the nine qualifiers in the final stage. The 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six teams each. The top two will advance to the semi-finals.
Goa who failed to qualify for the semi-finals last season, have named Derrick Pereira as head coach.
Selection for Goa State Civil Service kabaddi team on Sept 27
PANAJI: The Central Civil Service Cultural and Sports Board in collaboration with the Government of NCT Delhi will be organising All India Civil Services tournament in kabaddi at Thyagraj Stadium, Thyagraj Nagar, New Delhi from October 4 to 7, 2023.
The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs will be conducting a selection trial to select the Goa State Civil Services kabaddi team on September 27, at Multipurpose College Hall, Borda, Margao from 9.30 am onwards.
Interested players who are regular employees in government departments should report to Motilal Gaonkar APEO (Salcete) (9890968365/8999228032), Manthan Adpaikar, TSO (Salcete) (904972221/8080027034), Incharge Officer along with identity card duly signed by the Head of the Department and proper playing kit at the venue.
Beach soccer selection trials
The Goa Football Association will hold an open trial and coaching camp on September 27, 28 and 29 to select the Goa State team for the Beach Soccer Tournament at the 37th National Games. Clubs are requested to send their best players and report to the Head Coach Bruno Coutinho (9822381132)at the given time and venue.
