Argentina, Brazil friendly cancelled
SAO PAULO: A friendly between Brazil and Argentina planned in the United States in September has been cancelled as part of the fallout from the investigation into alleged corruption involving FIFA. The company handling logistics for the Argentine national team said on Tuesday that the match has been called off as the two Argentine businessmen who own Full Play, the sports marketing company which had the rights for the friendly, remain under house arrest in Argentina after being indicted in May by the US Justice Department. The US has launched a sweeping investigation into alleged bribery, racketeering and money-laundering, and indicted 14 soccer and sports marketing officials, including the Argentine businessmen.
Rooney to play testimonial friendly
LONDON: England football team captain and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will play for his former club Everton at ex-teammate Duncan Ferguson's testimonial after 11 years against Spanish side Villarreal on August 2. The United captain played for Everton at the age of 16 and was helped by Ferguson to develop as a player. "As a young lad growing up in Croxteth (in Liverpool), Duncan Ferguson was a hero of mine. As a young player at the club, he was an inspiration and, when I broke into the first team, he helped and looked after me," Rooney was quoted as saying by goal.com on Monday.
Ivory Coast name Michel as new coach
ABIDJAN: Michel Dussuyer has taken over as the new coach of African champions Ivory Coast, the country's football federation announced on Tuesday. It is yet another stint in African football for the 56-year-old-Frenchman, who has worked previously as national coach of Guinea in two separate spells besides being in charge of Benin. He has signed a two-year deal with the option for another two years, the federation said in a statement.
