Among couple of foreigners plying their trade in top flight football in India, Kingfisher East Bengal's South Korean attacking midfielder Do Dong Hyun stands out. The 22-year-old Korean who played in Australia and Japan was at Ambelim grounds on Tuesday for the team's training session. The Goan Everday caught up with Do for a free wheeling interview. Excerpts
Why did you choose to come to India?
Do: In 2014-15 I played for North East FC in the inaugrual Indian Super League.East Bengal team managment must have been impressed with my abilites and style of play and roped me in their team. I got the opportunity of coming to India with the Kolkata team that likes to play football. For me that was a major thing.
How has it been so far in India ?
Do: I have mixed feelings.It is hot here but I live in Kolkata with friendly people who loved football and I have got some nice teammates.That has made my stay so far quite warm and welcoming. But there are other things with which you have to adapt, like the training pitches.I can say that Indian football is not the easiest to adapt to.
What has been your early impression about the game here?
Do: There is talent. I have seen players with fantastic shots, pace and touch. But some times the talent is not being nurtured correctly. May be, football education is not same here and where the sport is No 1 and where the kids get taught from the tender age of six. Here, they come into the game at a later stage.
From South Korea to Kingfisher East Bengal how has the journey been?
Do: When I look back, I can't remember everything.It has been so fast.I have enjoyed my stints everywhere. It's fortunate to have been at Australia's Brisbane Roar (2012-2013), Japan FC's Gifu (2013-14) and South Korean National team in 2011.
How dou you see East Bengal's chances in ongoing I-League?
Do: I believe in my group. Yes, I know my role in the team pretty well. Hopefully, I will able to meet the expectations of the fans. I am in good shape this season and I scored 12 goals in the Calcutta League. I found the climate too hot but I have come to terms with it. Our coach Biswajit Bhattacharay, supporting stafff and physical trainer Samuel Omolo are doing a good job with us. Our preparation has been very good and now it's time for the players to step up.
What about other teams?
Do: I am impressed with Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC. They are good teams.No team in the I-League is weak. Everybody is fighting to do well.There is little that separates the teams.
