As part of efforts to promote grassroots hockey under the "One Stick, One Player" initiative, hockey kits were distributed on the occasion of Olympic Day to students at Loyola High School, Margao, by PWD Minister Digambar Kamat on Thursday.
The programme was held in the presence of Loyola Community Superior Fr Simon Fernandes, Headmaster Fr Anand De Souza, Goans Hockey secretary Farrel Furtado, president Abhay Bhaimaikar, South Goa Hockey secretary Nelly Rodrigues, treasurer Anjulo Fernandes and senior coach Inacio Fernandes.
Addressing the gathering, Kamat recalled his younger days as a hockey player and stressed the need to revive India's national game through commitment and hard work. He noted that hockey had brought immense pride to the country through its Olympic success and lauded the Indian team for its recent achievements on the international stage.
Goa Hockey secretary Furtado said the association remained committed to nurturing a love for hockey among youngsters. Recalling her own journey in the sport, she said hockey had taught her courage, independence, teamwork and leadership.
Headmaster Fr Anand De Souza appealed for support to further develop the Loyola sports ground and commended physical education teacher Ayyaz for his dedication and hard work in promoting sports among students.
