Mandopa Sporting Club defeated Margao Sports Club 1-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the 2nd Vauradencho Ixtt Trophy football tournament at the DSYA ground, Curtorim, on Thursday. The tournament is organised by Margao Sports Club in association with Batora United Curtorim.
Margao missed an early opportunity in the 10th minute when Hanshlum Furtado’s shot narrowly missed the target. Mandopa capitalised soon after, with Travis Souza scoring the lone goal in the 15th minute after collecting a loose ball outside the box and finishing from close range. Mandopa went into half-time with a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Margao intensified their attacks and tested Mandopa goalkeeper Selvin Gomes on several occasions, but failed to find the equaliser. Mandopa, too, were unable to add to their lead.
Travis Souza of Mandopa was adjudged Man of the Match, with the award presented by Jose Santan Rodrigues in the presence of GFA president Caitano Fernandes.

Curtorim Gymkhana win on penalties
MARGAO: Curtorim Gymkhana advanced to the semifinals of the Fr Agnelo Inter-Village Football Tournament after registering a 6-4 win in the tie-breaker against United Club, Verna, at the Panchayat Grounds, Avedem-Paroda. Curtorim took the lead after Anselm Fernandes capitalised on a defensive lapse to score. United Club, Verna, restored parity in the 15th minute through Meldin Moniz, who headed home from an aerial pass.
With the score locked at 1-1 at full time, the match was decided via a tie-breaker. Freddy Hilario, Elton Mascarenhas, Rhay Fernandes, Ryan Fernandes and Jovel Martins converted their kicks for Curtorim, while Joasel Fernandes, Roydon Rego and Jason Fernandes scored for Verna, as Curtorim sealed a 6-4 victory.

Cuncolim Union enter quarterfinals
MARGAO: Hosts Cuncolim Union defeated Sporting Club Davorlim 3-1 to move into the quarterfinals of the Vaidya Family Cup inter-village football tournament at the Cuncolim School ground on Thursday. Denvil Fernandes, Tushar Gaonkar and Shankar Gaunder scored for Cuncolim Union, while Somia Noronha netted the lone goal for Sporting Club Davorlim.

Goa University weightlifting teams announced
PANAJI: Goa University has selected its women’s and men’s weightlifting teams for participation in the AIU South West Zone Inter-University Weightlifting Championships 2025-26, to be held at SAGE University, Bhopal. The women’s championship will be held from January 10 to 11, 2026. The Goa University women’s team comprises Rizel Agnela Fernandes, Akansha Ashok Parsekar, Blazia Rebelo, Iram Irshad Khatri, Pushpa Vishwakarma, Agnes Fernandes, Joviette Emelia Moniz and Sakshi Haldankar. The team will be coached by Tanuj Kinalkar, with Prissie Fernandes as manager. The men’s championship will take place from January 13 to 15, 2026. The Goa University men’s team includes Gorakshnath Waifalkar, with Dr Ameet Pednekar serving as coach-cum-manager.

MARGAOGoan goalkeeper Ozen Vivian Silva has been named in India’s men’s futsal squad for the SAFF Futsal Championship 2026, announced by the All India Football Federation.Silva, who hails from Ambelim village, represented Ambelim Sports Club in the AIFF Futsal Club Championship.
