MARGAO
Mandopa Sporting Club came from behind to defeat Varca Sports Club 3-2 in the GFA Second Division League (Salcete Zone) and qualified for the South District play-off. Mandopa trailed 1-2 at half time at Govt school playground, Ambelim on Thursday.
With this win, Mandopa Sporting Club finished their engagements with 13 points from six matches and qualified for the South Goa Second Division play-off. Meanwhile, Tilamola United were relegated to Third Division after their 2-5 loss to Dicarpale Sports Club at Navelim.
Varca dominated proceedings in the first-half as the breakthrough goal came in the very 1st minute when striker Revee D'Costa beat the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. They upped the ante and scored another goal in the 20th minute when Johnas D'Costa got past the rival goalkeeper Selwyn Gomes with a clinical finish.
Travis D'Souza who had a good game, reduced the margin after picking up the ball from Aulon Gomes and the former beat the rival goalkeeeper with nice placement in the 30th minute.
Post resumption, Mandopa neutralised the lead through a spot-kick in the 49th minute when Clinton Dias was brought down by the rival defender and referee awarded a penalty kick. Aulon Gomes sent the goalkeeper Mohammed Shaikh the wrong way to put his team on level terms.
Mandopa upped the tempo and were rewarded when striker Travis D'Souza flicked the ball into the net off Aulon Gomes free-kick. In the 73rd minute, Columban Noronha of Varca Sports Club and Allister Gomes of Mandopa Sporting Club were given marching orders by referee for second bookings.
With time running out, Varca went all out but Mandopa defence were equal to the task, preserving their lead.
Dicarpale win big
Dicarpale Sports Club thrashed Tilamola United Sports Club 5-2 at Rosary Ground, Navelim. Dicarpale led 3-1 at the breather.
Paxton Gomes scored a brace (10th & 22nd minute) after Ryan Furtado had opened the scoring in the 4th minute. John Colaco (73rd) and Merilo Ferrao (90th) were the other goal-scorers for Dicarpale. Daniel D'Costa's brace (29th and 59th minute) reduced the deficit for Tilamola.
The match was all over as a contest in the first 45 minutes when Dicarpale grabbed the chances that came their way. Dicarpale left the Tilamola side gasping with their pace as Valmiky Miranda and Merilo Ferrrao came up with a stinging attack. They broke the deadlock in the 4th minute when Rayan Furtado picked up the ball from Paxton Gomes and the former punished the rival goalkeeper with neat finish.
In the 10th minute, striker Paxton Gomes doubled the lead with a clinical finish. Paxton Gomes, further increased the scoreline in the 22nd minute. Goalkeeper Antonio Carvalho could not do anything as Paxton found the target to make it 3-0 for Dicarpale. Tilamola fought back in the 29th minute when Daniel D'Costa's shot saw Dicarpale Sports Club goalkeeper Sachin Ashtekar fumble with the collection, and reduced the margin. Alvion Carvalho of Tilamola and Valmiky Miranda of Dicarpale were then sent off by referee Caetano Pereira for violent conduct.
In the 59th minute, Daniel D'Costa surged from the left, going past the rival defenders before beating goalkeeper Sachin Ashtekar hands down. Unfazed, Dicarpale Sports Club went into an attacking mode and troubled the rival defence with well-orchestrated raids.
John Colaco inflated the tally in the 73rd minute when he unleashed a stiff shot into the net. In the dying moments, Merilo Ferrao completed a big win, getting onto the score-sheet for Dicarpale.
Dicarpale Sports Club finished their Second Division engagements with 7 points from 6 matches while Tilamola were demoted to Third Division with one point from six matches.
