In a bid to boost boxing in Goa and give boxers the feel of professional boxing, Tito’s has come forward to host ‘The Great Fight Night’ on March 3 at 8 pm at Tito’s Arena, Baga. Ten boxers -- six men and four women -- will fight it out to win their bouts and take home cash prizes.
The organiser of the event and co-owner of Tito’s Ricardo De Souza said: “Tito’s is sponsoring four boxers to fight in different clubs every weekend under our brand name. This is sponsored by Goa Boxing Committee under Rohan Kaunte and I. We aim at promoting and recognising boxers and giving them an opportunity to showcase their talent. We hope more clubs will support us in this endeavour.”
There are two teams fielded for the ‘The Great Fight Night’. Team Lights Out has national camper Ashok Patil, national players Umesh Chavan, Anup Prasad, Rinky Dabholkar and national medallist Shrisha Jampulla, coached by Vishwanath Govekar and Arif. The other team Bone Crusher has a strong side with national players Pralhad Panda, AK Roshanzamir, Salim Wazur, Prachi Kerkar and Simran AK, coached by Chitambaram Naik and Pravin Shirodkar.
The winners will take home a cash prize of Rs 3,000 each while the runners-up will have to be content with Rs 1,000. “This is a good initiative where Ricardo De Souza has come forward to support the sport in a unique manner. We need our boxers to be rewarded for their performances and feel like stars. This will boost their performance in the sport and allow them to continue working hard,” Danuska Da Gama, secretary of Goa Boxing Association said.
The boxing event is likely to be a major attraction on the busy lane on the weekend which will attract tourists and local audience to witness and cheer the Goan talent. Besides, the evening will also have music, live performances, dancers, top local DJs, food and drinks.
To be a regular affair, these fight nights will be held at various locations in Goa to allow people to witness the sport and bring to the fore names of top Goan boxers who are probables for the forthcoming National Games to be held in November in Goa.
