Margao SC defeated Betalbatim Sporting Club 5–4 via a penalty shootout to be crowned champions of the 15th Wilred Leisure Club Football Tournament. The final was played under floodlights at the Dysa Ground, Curtorim, on Saturday.
Both teams displayed an exciting brand of football in front of over 3,000 spectators who turned up to witness the summit clash.
Margao SC struck early when Richie Vaz found the net in just the second minute to give his side the lead. Betalbatim Sporting Club had their chances, but Brenson Fernandes failed to convert. However, they managed to equalise in the 40th minute through Elroy Fernandes, making it 1–1.
With no further goals in regulation time, the match was decided through a tiebreaker, where Margao SC proved to be the better side and clinched the title 5–4.
The prizes were distributed by Chief Guest Alexio Reginald Lourenco, MLA of Curtorim Constituency and Chairman of GIDC in the presence of Rev. Fr. Manuel Dias, Parish Priest of Curtorim Jacob Ataide, Proprietor of K.K. Steels. Other dignitaries present included Fr. Anthony Pango (Senior Vice President, GFA), Andrew Ferrao, Costa Paul Rodrigues (GFA Executive Committee Members), GFA Match Commissioner Melvin, and several club officials. The players of Wilred Leisure SC were also felicitated on the occasion.
