Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim, Gauncar Higher Secondary School, Raia, Saviour of the World, Loutolim and St Alex Higher Secondary School, Curtorim stormed into the quarter-final of Salcete Taluka Under 17 Boys Subroto Mukherjee inter-school foootball tournament organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at Government School playground, Cuncolim on Friday.
In an evenly contested match, Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim prevailed over St Jude High School, Betalbatim 6-4 via tie-breaker as both the teams displayed attacking flair and there were few thrills at either end.
Both the teams continued in the same fashion after change of ends. Both the teams were tied 1-1 at full time. Chinchinim school had the last laugh in the tie-breaker.
In the second match, Gauncar Higher Secondary School, Raia beat Fr Agnel Multipurpose High School, Verna 5-4 via tie-breaker after both the teams were tied 1-1 at full time. Both the teams played in attacking fasihion and kept the crowds on their toes. Gaunkar Higher Secondary School proved to be better shooters in the penalty shoot out.
Saviour of the World, Loutolim overcame Damodar High School, Margao 1-0. The winners held slight edge over their opponents in both the session and troubled the rival defence with well orchestrated raids. The all-important goal came in the opening session when Birson Fernandes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. Stung by the early reversal, Damodar High School mounted tremedous pressure on the rival citadel but the rival defence stood tall in protecting the slender lead.
Post resumption, Saviour of the World continued to enjoy better ball possession and fired couple of good shots but it went wayward from a scoring position. At the other end, Damodar High School, had few scoring chances but their forwards shot wide from close range.
In their last match, St Alex Higher Secondary School, Curtorim nudged out Our Lady of Rosary High School, Fatorda 2-1 after leading 1-0 at half time. The highlight of the day was a splendid brace by Hilario Joy. Both the teams started the game on a cautious note, as the match progresssed, St Alex Higher Secondary School, slowly took control and striker Hilario Joy who was in the thick of action broke the deadlock with a snap shot. Stung by that setback, Our Lady of Rosary High School intensified their attack but rival defenders thwarted them with neat tackles.
Crossing over, Our Lady of Rosary High School, put up a better display and troubled the rival defence with sporadic raids. Steve D'Souza neutralised the lead.
Stung by that setback, St Alex Higher Secondary went all out and Hilario Joy struck the match-winner to troop out worthy winners.
In under 14 Subroto Mukherjee school tournament at SAG Artificial Turf ground, Fatorda, Rosary High School, Navelim made short work of Mae dos Pobres High School, Nuvem 3-0 after leading 2-0 at lemon-break. Rosary High School dominated the game right from the word go and pushed their opponents on the backfoot. Jonas Colaco opened the scoring soon after the kick off. Spurred by the early success, Rosary High School tormented the rival defence with dangerous raids and doubled the lead through Ceazar Colaco.
After the break, Rosary High School continued to enjoy the lion's share of exchanges and Darren Fernandes drove the last nail into the rival coffin.
In the second match, The King's School pipped AIM 1-0. The lone goal of the match came through the boots of Darren Fernandes.
In the last match of the day, St Jude High School, Betalbatim shunted out St Anthony's Sports Club, Majorda 2-1 via tiebreaker after both the teams were tied 1-1 at full time.
