Cycling Goa, an association registered in 2013 for the cycling enthusiasts of Goa, will organise India’s first multi-stage cross country race in the state. The Goa International Mountain Bike Challenge (GIMBC) will be held over three days from October 16-18.
Besides 50 other cyclists, also seen at the event will be international Swiss cyclist Pablo Erat, a well-known participant in triathlons. The total prize money for the event is Rs 3.50 lacs.
“This race is first of its kind. There is no other race like this anywhere in India. We are going to make use of the natural terrain available here in Goa for this competition," Bryan Soares, president of Cycling Goa, said at a press conference to announce the event. “This year five Goans will be participating in this race. By next year we expect to make this mountain bike challenge better and bigger,” added Bryan.
Cycling Goa has received a total of 50 entries from cycling enthusiasts from across the country. The event will get participants from Switzerland, Australia and Portugal. Riders from Nepal, who have been podium finishers in the past, are already here. GIMBC will be conducted in a cross country format covering three different routes. The race will be divided into three categories -- general men, women and the masters (above 45 years). The race will feature the best talent among the MTB riders in India and some exciting international talent.
“In addition to endurance and strength one also needs skills to be a part of this event. This is a superb way of connecting with nature,” Amey Kakodkar, executive member of Cycling Goa, said. Another executive member Rainer Dias said: “Most of us are recreational cyclist this will be something new for Goans and will definitely be a fun activity.”
The department of Goa Tourism and Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) have partnered for this event. Manipal Hospitals are the medical partners for the event, while the hospitality and venues partners are DOT Properties, Uguem, Jungle Book, Collem, Club Gaspar Dias and YMCA.
SCHEDULE
October 16: Day 1 - Individual time trial of 2 kms followed by 6 kms x 7 laps (42 kms) of cross country
October 17: Day 2 - Devils Circuit 7 kms x 8 laps (56 kms) of cross country
October 18: Day 3 - Audience friendly 4 kms x 8 laps (32 kms) of city based cross country trail
