MARGAO: Navelim Sporting Club edged past St Anthony SC Assolda 5-4 via the tiebreaker to book their place in the quarterfinals of the 53rd Custodio Memorial Football Tournament, organised by Raia Sporting Club at the Panchayat Ground, Raia, on Saturday.
St Anthony SC Assolda broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when Frazer Gomes unleashed a powerful ground shot that beat the Navelim goalkeeper to give his side a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
After the restart, St Anthony SC Assolda defended resolutely to protect their advantage, but Navelim Sporting Club found the equaliser in the 66th minute through Den Pereira, who brought his side back into the contest at 1-1.
With neither team able to find a winner in regulation time, the match was decided through a tiebreaker. Navelim Sporting Club held their nerve from the spot, converting their chances more efficiently to secure a 5-4 victory and progress to the quarterfinals.
Fr Peter D'Souza, Assistant Parish Priest of Our Lady of Snows Church, Raia, presented the Man of the Match award to Mehboob Dateed for his outstanding performance.
