Janata HS Mapusa and St Anthony HS Guirim registered thumping wins in the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs State Level Nehru Hockey Under-15 Boys tournament on Wednesday morning at Hockey Stadium, Peddem, Mapusa.
In the opening day matches of the competition, Janata HS, who have several boys as part of the Khelo India hockey project based at Peddem, meant business right from the start and scored goals at will to outplay Holy Cross HS Siolim 13-0.
Dilshad Ali scored five goals while Sachin Lamani netted two while Nitin Boro, Deepak Lamani, Jyotiba Nilajkar and Rajesh Lamani netted one goal apiece. Janata HS next meet St Britto HS, Mapusa on August 23 at 9.30 am.
St Anthony HS Guirim also registered a one-sided win over South Goa school St Joseph Educational Institute, Chandor, 15-3. Suraj Kharsel notched a double hat-trick while Mohan Dodamani scored a hat-trick while Rajiv Gond and Nashon Fernandes scored two goals apiece. Shreyesh Hundre and Dishank Maulvinkar scored one goal each.
In another match, Holy Cross HS Bastora defeated Honda HS Honda 9-0 and will take on St Anthony HS Guirim on August 23 at 10.45 am.
For the Honda school from Sattari, the hockey youth development mission started by Fr Domnic Alvares and a few other hockey promoters from North Goa, continues. The hockey mission continues under the watchful eyes of Fr George Nandiyala in Honda and surrounding areas, after the transfer of Fr Alvares to Britona parish. “We have 46 boys and 36 girls training in Honda of different age groups and under different coaches,” said Fr George, after the first-round loss to the Bastora school.
Both the Roman Catholic priests belong to the Society of the Missionaries of St Francis Xavier, Pilar, commonly referred to as the Society of Pilar or the Pilar Fathers.
The first-round action continues on Thursday with two of the matches all-South Goa affairs. Damodar HS Gudi take on Our Lady of Lourdes HS Utorda, at 9.30 am, followed by a match between Perpetual Succour Convent HS Navelim and St Jude HS Betalbatim, at 2.30 pm. Another South Goa school, St Anthony HS Majorda meet their North Goa opponents St Joseph HS Calangute at 10.45 am.
