St Joseph HS Calangute, St Jude HS Betalbatim and Damodar English HS Gudi yesterday registered contrasting wins in the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs Nehru Hockey tournament for U-15 Boys.
Two of the three matches were all-South Goa encounters. Damodar English HS Gudi outplayed Our Lady of Lourdes Hs Utorda 12-0.
Damodar HS started the scoring in the very first minute and then scored goals at will to sound the board in the 13th, 18th, 19th, 24th, 26th 32nd, 35th and 43rd minutes.
Goa national level sub-junior player Ansh Gaonkar and Gundu Gayakwad both scored a hat-trick apiece while Abhishek Chauhan accounted for two goals. Tanmay Patil, Sahil Sahini, Kasif Mohammed and Yatharth Gaonkar scored one goal apiece.
Of the dozen goals scored by Gudi, nine were field goals while three came through penalty corner conversions. The win took the Gudi school to the next round and will take on St Joseph HS Calangute.
The Calangute school got the better of their South Goa counterparts St Anthony HS Majorda 2-1 via the penalty shootout. Raj Calvadi and Wensly Fernandes netted for Calangute school in the penalty shootout, which will take on another South Goa school Damodar HS Gudi in the next clash on Saturday.
In another encounter involving schools from South Goa, St Jude HS Betalbatim defeated Perpetual Succour Convent HS Navelim 6-1. It was a keenly fought encounter with the Navelim school giving their best after being down by two goals within a span of six minutes. They rallied to pull one back in the 18th minute through Cleric Fernandes but thereafter could not manage to get past the last line of Betalbatim defence. Earlier, Betalbatim school had a penalty corner conversion from Mahesh and added a second one through a penalty stroke from Rahul Mahtri.
Thereafter St Jude scored through the efforts of Mahesh, Fedrickson Fernandes, Rahul Mahtri and Samuel Topno, three of which were field goals and one a penalty corner conversion.
On Friday, Janata HS Mapusa meet St Britto HS Mapusa at 9.30 am, followed by St Anthony HS Guirim vs Holy Cross HS Bastora at 10.45 am.
