Panjim Veterans eked out a narrow 2-1 win over Navelim Veterans to move into the semi-finals of All Goa Assolda Veterans football tournament organised by Assolda Veterans at Quepem Sports Complex, Borimol, Quepem on Sunday. Both the teams were tied 1-1 at half time.
The teams displayed vintage football with one-touch football and kept the crowds on their toes. Cosmi Crasto put Panjim Veterans into the lead early in the game with a stiff grounder. However, their joy was short-lived and former India defender Robert Fernandes cancelled the lead with a snap shot.
Post resumption, both the teams played aggressive football and the action shifted from one end to the other. Persistent forays resulted in a breakthrough when Alex Alvares unleashed a volley which crashed into the net. Stunned by the goal, Navelim Veterans went into the attacking mode and launched a barrage of attacks but the Panjim Veterans were tall in protecting the slender lead. Panjim Veterans had a couple of scoring opportunities but their forwards were erratic after reaching the rival danger zone and the score remained 2-1 in their favour.
