Padre Conceicao College of Engineering (PCCE), Verna, won the Goa University Inter-Collegiate Tennis Championship for men for 2026-27, defeating Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda, 2-1 in the final at the Fatorda Sports Complex tennis courts on Tuesday.
Punit Fadte gave PCCE the lead in the first singles, defeating Dhruv Birje 6-1. Don Bosco levelled the contest through Anuj Vernekar, who beat Brullino Fernandes 6-4 in the second singles.
The title was decided in the doubles, where Fadte and Fernandes defeated Vernekar and Flynn Gomes 6-2 to seal the championship for PCCE.
Fadte was named the Best Player of the Tournament for the second consecutive year.
PCCE had earlier defeated St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim-Mormugao, 2-1 in the semi-finals, while Don Bosco College of Engineering beat Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem, by the same margin.
A total of 18 teams participated in the two-day championship. The presentation ceremony was attended by chief guest Dr Devashish Bagchi, Director of Physical Education and Sports at Parvatibai Chowgule College, Margao, guest of honour Dr Rajan Mathew, Director of Physical Education and Sports at Government College, Quepem, and Goa University Assistant Director of Physical Education and Sports Balachandra Jadar.
The PCCE team comprised Fadte, Akshat Fadte, Fernandes, Ian Rodrigues and Clint Mascarenhas, and was accompanied by the Director of Physical Education and Sports, Ugam Prabhudesai. The Don Bosco team comprised Vernekar, Birje, Gandharv Naik, Gomes and Dattaprasad Prabhu, accompanied by the Director of Physical Education and Sports, Clifford Britto.
