Perpetual Succour Convent HS, Navelim, edged past St Rita's HS, Maina, 3-2 to move into the quarter-finals of St Joseph Vaz Cup inter-school football tournament organised by Mount Mary's HS, Chinchinim, on Saturday.
Both teams displayed attacking brand of soccer and St Rita's took over the reins when Levan Castana shot wide off Myron Silva from hand-shaking distance.
At the other end, Perputual Succour Convent HS broke the deadlock when Newel D'Silva beat the rival goalkeeper with neat finish. Frendem Pires doubled the lead when he nicely tapped it home off a Newel D'Silva assist in the 21st minute. Down by two goals, St Rita's upped the ante and Richie Hilario reduced the deficit in the 22nd minute. Newel D'Silva increase their tally in the 30th minute. Soon after, Richie Hilario's shot from close range, was blocked by defender Ethan Fernandes of Perpetual. Minutes later, Stewart D'Mello reduced the margin for St Rita's in the 40th minute.
In anther match, Rosary Convent HS, Navelim, defeated Bethany Convent HS 3-1. Ajay Raj scored a brace in the 14th and 19th minute while Julius Ferrao was the other goal-scorer. Stelen Oliver pulled a goal back for Bethany in the 49th minute.
