Calangute Association registered a solitary goal win over Guardian Angel Sports Club in the Goa Football Association Selvel Goa Professional League, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Monday.
Ganesh Thakur scored the lone goal of the game in the 20th minute for Calangute Association.
In early box action in the eighth minute, Gilbert picked up the tallest man in the box - Fulganco Cardozo with his free-kick. However, the latter's header was easily pouched by Calangute Association keeper Presley Mascarenhas at the first post.
Calangute Association's Moises D'Sa then forced Guardian Angel keeper Shivam Pednekar to pull off a stunning save in the 10th minute to stop the effort from a distance with the ball heading into the bottom right corner.
The goal arrived in the 20th minute as Calvin Barreto made a fine run on the left flank before cutting back in the box to two of his team-mates. Ganesh pounced on the ball to slam it into the net.
Ganesh then hit a 25-yard shot to force another good save from the keeper. At the other end, Calangute Association frustrated Guardian Angel with good defending in the early part of the game. Clifton had a shot from outside the box for Guardian Angel but it didn't create any problems for the opposition keeper.
Guardian Angel first-half substitute Joaquim Abranches created an opportunity for his side soon after coming on when he whipped in a low cross from the left, which Fedrich failed to direct on target. On seeing goalkeeper Shivam out of his position, Calangute Association's Frazer Viegas tried a shot from a distance, which sailed over the bar. In the 40th minute, Guardian Angel had their best chance to restore parity when Fedrich sent an excellent cross to an unmarked Abranches. However, the striker missed the simplest of chances to put it behind the net.
Soon after the restart, Calangute nearly doubled the lead when Godfrey sent in a curling delivery at the far post, but Chaitan couldn't direct the ball into the frame. In the 50th minute, Guardian Angel keeper spilled Moises D'Sa's shot from outside the box, which was slammed in by Calvin. However, the effort was ruled offside.
Guardian Angel SC were better in the second half and created plenty of half-chances throughout. Abranches did his best to give his side some attacking teeth but the veteran striker lacked support. In the 68th minute, Calvin managed to put the ball into the net, but his effort was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper.
Abranches had yet another opportunity when he was fed with a cross from the left, but he headed straight to the keeper. At the other end, Calvin was denied by a brilliant Shivam, who dived to his right to punch the ball for a corner. In the 82nd minute, Shivam was again called into action as he denied Vaibhav in a one-on-one situation.
