MARGAO: The Red Chillies began their campaign on a winning note, edging past the Yellow Daffodils 2-1 on the second day of the inaugural GVFC Football League at St Cruz Ground on Sunday.
Jack Gonsalves handed the Red Chillies an early lead before Nikita Lobo Naik restored parity for the Yellow Daffodils midway through the second session. However, Francisco Xavier Souza struck the decisive goal moments later, heading home from a pinpoint cross by skipper Fr Franky Fernandes.
Following the opening round of matches, the Red Chillies and Green Veggies share the top spot in the standings with three points each, while Blue Atlantic and Yellow Daffodils are yet to register a point.
The GVFC Football League features players divided into four age categories, ranging from 45 years to over 60 years. Each match is played in three sessions of 20 minutes each, with short intervals between sessions. The second round of fixtures will be played next weekend.
